Article Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti: Reforms in the Traditional Education System

bishwajit-kumar-singh What initiative is being taken by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti to promote education across the country?
Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has presence all over the country. As per the policy of the Government, one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) is to be established in each district. As per the budget announcements of 2016, we have to set up 62 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the newly formed districts. Out of 62 schools, 30 schools will be operational from temporary sites by this year. Along with this, various state governments have offered more than 40 sites for setting up Navodaya Vidyalayas. This is a part of the expansion.

The second part is to improve the quality of education and the outcomes of the students. There is a shortage of good teachers for the last few years which is a big problem. To solve this, we will recruit around 2,300 teachers as PGTs, TGTs and around 100 headmasters through a direct recruitment drive by the end of July this year. Hence, we are expecting a pool of good school teachers by next year which will result in an improvement in the quality of education in schools.

We are also taking various measures to bridge the gaps in the admission process, especially from class 6-11. Online application process will start from next year for admission in Navodaya Vidyalayas. The Central Board of Secondary Education will be the exam conducting authority. The entrance test will be based on basis to avoid impersonation.
We are also focusing on sports. In association with Sports Authority of India, we will set up five centers of excellence for Archery, Boxing, Table Tennis, Wrestling and Athletics.

Many schools globally are adopting innovative practices to improve teaching-learning practices .

How is NVS planning to bring Indian school education system at par with the world?
As far as adopting the latest innovative practices are concerned, we have to take every step very carefully. Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential co-educational schools and in case of smart classrooms, we have to provide smart phones, tablets and i-pads to each and every student. Though, we have regulated the lecture delivery system through smart classrooms but it is necessary to take preventive measures to avoid any negative situation.

We have provided smart classrooms to our students for at least eight-nine hours,

Where they can go there and use all kinds of technical devices like interactive boards, laptops under close surveillance. Use of technical equipment is not allowed in hostels, hostels and their regular classes.
In order to implement Information Technology (IT) related initiatives in the teaching-learning process, various experts will train the teacher through 10-15 days workshop on various subjects. During the training of a particular subject, the entire curriculum will be enriched in such a way that students can learn a subject through traditional classes or through presentations or IT based solutions. The subject or module of any given subject will traditionally be taught following digital demonstrations.
The approach adopted in Navodaya Vidyalayas is different from other smart teaching or learning solutions. It is an integrated approach of traditional learning, visual and digital learning.

In association with the Indian Sports Authority, we will set up five centers of excellence for Archery, Boxing, Table Tennis, Wrestling and Athletics.

There is a huge gap between schools in rural and urban areas, what is the initiative taken by NVS to bridge this gap?
In the matter of education, students of urban areas always dominate the students of rural areas. Navodaya Vidyalayas are established in such a way that rural students get the same education facilities as urban students.
Most of our school districts are located in isolated areas, with 30 acres of campus and residential. Secondly, since it is isolated, it has all the facilities like education, sports, cultural activities etc. In fact the student-teacher ratio in these subjects is far better than in any other schools. So our approach is more focused, we are providing better facilities than any other urban school.

What is the initiative taken by NVS to increase vocational training in schools?
We are trying our best to start many vocational courses in JNVs. We have also got in-principle approval for schools where we plan to start vocational courses during the holidays. We will conduct vocational courses classes for three months in class 11th as well as class 12th. So, after passing out from schools, students will get six months training in a particular subject. we have
